It is crucial that you safely store alcohol, cannabis, prescription and non-prescription drugs to prevent poisoning accidents. Children and pets are at serious risk from accidental poisonings.
Recommendations for Safe Storage:
- Keep substances out of reach and out of sight
- Lock up substances in a cupboard or container
- Store substances separately from regular food and drinks
- Keep substances in the original labelled container
- Never leave substances unattended where children or pets can access them
- Keep substances in secure packaging, such as in child-resistant packaging
Drug Poisoning
If you think a child has ingested alcohol, cannabis, or another drug:
- Call the Ontario Poison Centre immediately at 1-844-POISON-X or 1-844-2764-7669 (available 24/7).
- Go to the emergency room. Tell the staff what you think they may have ingested. A quicker diagnosis can prevent serious harm.
- If your child has difficulty breathing or is unconscious, call 911.
If you think a pet has ingested alcohol, cannabis, or another drug:
- Call your vet immediately.
