Your KidsChild Immunizations

Vaccine Requirements for School & Childcare

As a Public Health Unit, we are required to ensure that children in Chatham-Kent are up to date on their vaccinations or have appropriate vaccine exemptions in place when attending school or childcare facilities. These requirements are mandated by the Ministry of Ontario's "Immunization of School Peoples Act" (ISPA) and the "Child Care and Early Years Act".

Before your child starts school or daycare, please report your child’s vaccinations to us. You can submit the information online through ICON, or complete the school or daycare form and submit it to CK Public Health with a copy of your child's immunization record. If you have any questions, contact us for help!

Grade 7 Vaccine Program

In Ontario, Public Health Nurses visit local elementary schools to offer three vaccinations to students in Grade 7. These vaccines are routinely given in Grade 7 because these vaccines work better at a younger age to provide long-lasting protection.

  1. Meningococcal: This vaccine protects you from a bacteria that can cause an infection in your brain, spinal cord, and blood. The vaccine is approximately 80%-85% effective in preventing infection from 4 types of meningococcal bacteria
  2. Hepatitis B: This vaccine protects you from a virus that can cause liver damage and cancer of the liver. Once all doses of the vaccine are received, the vaccine is 95% to 100% effective in preventing chronic hepatitis B
  3. HPV: This vaccine protects you from a virus that can cause cancer, including cervical and anal cancers. The HPV vaccine is nearly 100% effective at preventing HPV infections that can cause cancer! Check out this video to learn more!

In September, students in Grade 7 receive a consent package to complete. We will only provide vaccines to students who have returned a completed form.

    Vaccine Exemptions

CK Public Health urges all children and adults to receive routine vaccinations, unless there is a medical reason not to. If you choose not to vaccinate, you should understand the risks.

Children in Ontario that are not up to date with required vaccines must have a completed exemption to attend school or daycare without interruptions. We recognize that each child's situation is unique, and we recommend speaking with your healthcare provider when deciding which exemption option best meets your child's needs and specific family situation. At any time, a parent or child can decide to continue with the Ontario Vaccination Program regardless of previous immunization exemptions.

If there is a medical reason you wish to have your child exempt from any or all immunization requirements for school, you must complete the appropriate medical exemption with your healthcare provider. Once completed it must be submitted in person to CK Public Health at 425 Grand Ave, Chatham ON.
